Home Page Table Display

Postby Joshua » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:03 pm

I have three primary categories and many subcategories. When the amount of subcategories vary (I create or delete some), the formatting changes so the middle primary category gets pushed beneath the other two: mycommunicationarticles[dot]com

It seems I can bypass this only when the subcategories in the primary categories are equal in number. Any ideas how I can fix this with css perhaps?

Joshua,

Could you send a link so we can see what you are referring to?

My mistake Jodi, I added a category to fix the issue. Check out the url provided in my original post. AD automatically sets the table columns to 33%, yet it overflows.

I just discovered that when it displays ugly like it is now, the first two primary categories are in the same column and the last primary category (self development) is in it's own column, which then gets pushed down a row.

When I add that extra subcategory so the primary categories have the same number of sub-categories (and hence the same number of rows), then AD has three columns, one for each primary category.

What can I do about this seeing that AD only has a damn {CATEGORYLIST} tag in index.tpl?

Joshua, yes, when using tags, we are confined to how well (or badly) they were written. Since we can't rewrite this, we go around it. LOL

If you would take a look at Joseph's directory, http://business-tech-management.brochin.net/

You can see we made a mock index page and it enabled us to keep the main categories only on the first page. These should include your main keywords. When you click on these categories, it will take you to the main cat page and there you will find the sub categories.

Best solution I've found.

Ah, thanks Jodi. Well, AD was badly written I hear.

So you're suggesting the only solution I have is to create my own home page?

I'm thinking of migrating to Article Friendly though URLs could be too much of a hassle.

AD is not for the faint of heart and it could certainly use some improvement. I hear good things about AF too. But creating your own index page is not hard at all. After the weekend I could send you the way to do it if you'd like.

Bill Platt is writing a new directory script soon. You may want to hold off and see how that works out. Knowing Bill, it should be fabulous.

I could create an index page, but I'd just load the page, view the code, copy it, and save it. Of course then, nothing is dynamic.

If your way keeps everything dynamic (like recent articles, the sidebar and header templates, etc. - a part from categories I guess), I'd like to receive the way to do it... Actually, I just realized I'll replace the template tag code with the category links. Done! Thanks Jodi... I guess ;D

LOL... yeah, I suppose I am. But these are only things I've written down that OTHER people did. I'm no programmer. If I was, I would have done what Bill is doing a long time ago. ;) I'm a designer. I have used these codes on my sites with great success however. There is a way to keep an AD site from being hacked, but it is does mean taking these precautions.

I need to fix the smilies on this forum, huh?
