How do you get your article directory to rank well in the Search Engines? Questions and suggestions welcome.

How would I get the article header to display the article url in the following configuration.(not a real link)....in other words....showing the canonical page.

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.abcarticledirectory.com/Article/Sony-Vaio-Laptop-VPCS11X9E-B/814xxx">

A canonical page is the preferred version of a set of pages with highly similar content....such as print versions of an article.

what's the difference between a simple tags and Canonical tags?
